TEASER
FADE IN.
EXT. PARK - DAY
Open on a wide shot of a cluster of adults at a barbeque. Pan
across various people until we get to CONNOR dumping a bag of
charcoal into a large keg style grill.
GABRIELLA is nearby, looking bemused.
GABRIELLA
Ummm...maybe you didn't see these
in Quor'Toth, but there are gas
powered grills now.
Connor shoots her a look as he squeezes an entire bottle of
lighter fluid on the coals.
CONNOR
I'm old fashioned. You haven't
lived until you've had a genuine
charcoal grilled burger.
(beat; looks at her)
Veggie burger. I keep forgetting.
He pats himself down and searches his pockets. Coming up
empty handed, he digs through a nearby duffel bag. Again
empty handed, he stands and sighs.
KAIA walks up to Gabriella and hands her a drink. Gabriella
nods her thanks.
CONNOR
Damn, knew I forgot something.
(to the girls)
I'm guessing neither of you have a
book of matches.
Both of the girls shakes their heads. Connor picks the duffel
bag up and continues searching through it.
Gabriella winks at Kaia, bends over to the grill, and:
GABRIELLA
(whispering)
Incendia.
A pillar of FLAME shoots from the grill into the sky,
startling everyone in attendance and knocking a shocked
Connor flat on his ass.
Gabriella and Kaia look at him and smile coyly.
GABRIELLA
(sips her drink)
You're welcome.
They walk off. Stay on Connor, now looking at the grill,
still in disbelief.
ON Gabriella and Kaia walking through the park.
KAIA
How's the work on the shop going?
GABRIELLA
Painfully slow. This-
(pats her stab wound)
-isn't helping either. Stretching
still hurts.
(beat)
Wish I was powerful enough to just
snap my fingers and the place
rebuilt itself. This manual labor
stuff stinks.
KAIA
That's what Connor's for.
They chuckle and sip their drinks. Kaia looks around at the
crowd.
KAIA
Everyone seems to be enjoying
themselves. Even if it's for a day,
I think they needed this after the
kids...
(beat)
I felt like crap just telling Trish
Teran was dead. I couldn't imagine
actually being Trish in that
scenario, could you?
Gabriella looks away. Painful memories.
GABRIELLA
I don't think I'd want to.
(beat)
You're right though. Good to see
everyone out and smiling.
Kaia looks ahead of them and points.
KAIA
Not everyone.
PIKE is sitting under a tree eating an apple, looking at
everything and nothing all at once.
KAIA
Excuse me one minute.
She walks over to the tree and kneels down to meet Pike's
eyes. They stare at each other for a beat before she lays
flat out on her back with her head resting on his leg,
looking out at everyone else.
He lightly strokes her hair with one hand, the other enclosed
in one of hers. They sit like this for a moment before:
PIKE
Not going to say anything?
KAIA
Nope.
(beat)
Anything I say would be an obvious,
hollow attempt to make you feel
better and it'd be generic crap
anyone would say to you.
(mocking voice)
It's not your fault. You did all
you could. Don't blame yourself.
Blah dee blah dee blah.
(normal voice)
You know all that already.
She turns so she's looking into his eyes again.
KAIA
So I'm just going to lay here on
your lap, let you enjoy my company
in silence, and hope that's enough
to help you feel a little better,
k?
Pike can't help it. He has to smile.
PIKE
Okay.
KAIA
See, it's working already. Give it
another couple hours and-
She's cut off by her cell phone ringing. She fishes it out of
her pocket, looks at the face, and sighs.
KAIA
(sitting up)
Man doesn't know you exist and I
swear he can still sense when I'm
with you.
(into phone)
Hi, Daddy.
INTERCUT WITH:
INT. LIVING ROOM - SINCAID HOME - SAME TIME
TREVOR SINCAID, early fifties, weathered with a powerful air
of authority about him, is on the other side of the
conversation.
TREVOR
Hey sweetie. Any chance of you
making an appearance for dinner? We
were going to eat now, but your
mother wanted me to call you first
to see if you'd make it.
Trevor is pacing back and forth in the living room for the
duration of this conversation.
KAIA
(sighs)
I don't know. I'm out with friends
and-
TREVOR
No, that's fine. You did remember
Colby's trials start tonight as
well, right?
Kaia shuts her eyes and silently curses herself.
KAIA
(resigned)
I'll be there. I'm going to miss
dinner, but I'll try to be there by
sundown, okay?
TREVOR
That's fine. I'll see you tonight.
I love you, Kaia.
KAIA
Love you too, Dad.
They hang up and:
END INTERCUT
We stay with Kaia. She lays back down on Pike, who resumes
stroking her hair.
PIKE
You really must be a daddy's girl.
Can't remember the last time he
didn't call you and you've got how
many sibs?
KAIA
Seven brothers and two sisters.
PIKE
Right.
(beat; blinks)
Wait, I thought it was three
sisters.
A beat.
KAIA
(wary)
No, it's definitely two. I think
I'd know.
PIKE
Well yeah.
(beat)
Thank you for putting this
together. The tenants needed this.
We had the memorial, but...yeah.
Thanks.
Kaia sits up and gives him a light kiss.
GABRIELLA (O.S.)
Hey, Kaia!
ON Gabriella standing with her hands cupped to her mouth.
Behind her, Connor flips something on the grill and a small
blast of fire makes him take a few steps back.
GABRIELLA
How do you two want your steaks?
Kaia and Pike both cup their hands to their mouths.
KAIA
Rare!
PIKE
Well done!
Gabriella nods and turns back in Connor's direction.
BACK ON Pike wrapping his arms around Kaia and kissing the
back of her head.
INT. DINING ROOM - SINCAID HOME - LATER
Trevor is seated at a large, Asian style circular dinner
table with nothing on it. There's a bunch of other people
there, several young boys and girls and a few about Kaia's
age. They're all wearing bathrobes.
A slim redhead in her late forties enters the room and stands
at an empty spot next to Trevor. This is CLAIRE SINCAID,
Kaia's mother.
CLAIRE
Dinner's ready, kids. Let's just
say grace first. Nick, it's your
turn I believe.
NICK SINCAID, a frail boy no older than ten, doesn't seem too
enthused with the idea.
NICK
What about Kaia?
TREVOR
She's not going to make it tonight,
son.
NICK
(whining)
But what about Colby's-
TREVOR
She remembers and promises she'll
be here after dinner. Now, let's
say grace.
Everyone bows their heads and closes their eyes.
NICK
(speaking quickly)
God Bless this food we're about to
receive. Also, please bless Mom,
Dad, whoever makes video games, and
all my brothers and
sisters...except Josh. Amen.
EVERYONE ELSE
Amen.
Claire disappears into the kitchen. Trevor ruffles his son's
head.
A moment later, Claire reappears pushing a bound and gagged,
terrified looking MAN in on a gurney. Some of the kids help
her slide the man onto the table.
ON Trevor smiling at his wife before looking at the man. His
eyes turn jet BLACK and fur starts to grow on his face.
A wide shot shows this same change happening to the entire
family. The hostage screams through his gag, already sensing
what's about to happen.
Everyone sheds their robes just as the fur covers their
entire bodies. A few seconds later, the table is surrounded
by full fledged, drooling, snarling WEREWOLVES.
"Dinner" closes his eyes and yells one more time.
BLACK OUT.
END OF TEASER
ACT ONE
FADE IN.
EXT. LOS ANGELES SKYLINE - MORNING
Establishing shot of the sun rising on a day.
INT. PIKE'S APARTMENT - MORNING
Pike is laid out on his couch, fast asleep. Kaia is laying on
top of him (both fully clothed, mind you). Pike stirs as he
wakes up and removes the blanket that was loosely covering
them.
PIKE
(dreamy)
Good morning.
KAIA
Good-
(eyes snap open)
-morning?
She bolts up into a sitting position, wide awake now. She
looks to the rays of the rising sun coming in through the
window.
KAIA
Oh crap.
She leans over the side of the couch and retrieves her shoes.
Pike, not too concerned with the time of day, sits up on the
couch and stretches.
PIKE
Let me guess. You forgot to call
again.
Kaia nods as she gets to her feet.
KAIA
(looking around)
Where'd I leave my purse?
PIKE
Kaia-
KAIA
Oli, please, not right now. I just
need to get home.
She continues to look around the room frantically.
PIKE
(soft)
Okay.
(beat)
It's over by the girls.
Kaia darts across the room to the gun case and picks up her
purse. She finally slows down as she gets back to Pike,
kneeling down and raising his chin with her head to look at
her.
KAIA
I'm sorry. One of my brothers is
going through something really
important the next few days and I
need to be there for it.
Pike pinches the bridge of his nose and squints his eyes shut
for a second. Then he stands up and starts to walk off.
PIKE
Right. Whatever.
Kaia hangs on to his wrist and holds him in place as she
stands up.
KAIA
Hey, come on, don't be like this.
She wraps her arms around his waist.
KAIA
One of these days, I'll explain it
all.
PIKE
No, I get it. Your folks are old
school. Just couldn't imagine me
living at home when I'm twenty-six.
KAIA
Has its perks. No rent. No bills.
Cooked meals.
PIKE
You'd get the same things living
here.
She gives him a gentle shake.
KAIA
Oli, you're a horrible cook. You'd
probably burn ice.
PIKE
Fair point.
(beat; blinks)
How do you burn ice?
Kaia suddenly realizes the stupidity of the analogy.
KAIA
I...don't know, but if there's a
way, I'm sure you'd figure it out.
This finally gets Pike to smile. Kaia smiles as well. Mission
accomplished.
KAIA
You gonna be around later? Before
dinner?
PIKE
I told G & C I'd help out with
rebuilding their store. Least I can
do after...
KAIA
Yeah. Well, I'll go check in with
the warden, then I'll meet you
there, k?
She releases him and walks around to face him. He nods in
agreement.
KAIA
Love you.
Awkward moment.
KAIA
It's okay.
(kisses him)
You don't have to say it yet.
She turns and leaves. Pike goes to the fridge, grabs a beer,
and downs half of it in one giant swig. He looks at the front
door, sighs, and rolls his neck, popping it a couple times.
EXT. SINCAID HOME - DAY
Kaia fishes her keys out of her purse, but the door opens
before she can unlock it.
Claire, holding a cup of coffee and wearing a bathrobe, burps
lightly. She licks a speck of BLOOD off the side of her lips.
CLAIRE
Morning, dear. You missed
breakfast.
She walks past Kaia and sits in a rocking chair on the front
porch.
INT. LIVING ROOM - SINCAID HOME - DAY
Nick and another boy around his age are fussing over what to
watch on television, both of them sitting mere inches from
the screen.
Trevor is sitting in an easy chair reading today's newspaper.
In the background, Kaia walks past the room, heading for a
nearby flight of stairs.
TREVOR
(sharp)
Kaia!
Kaia stops on the first step and bows her head as she comes
before her father. Trevor calmly folds the paper and places
it in his lap.
TREVOR
I'm not going to reprimand you
being out during the moon.
KAIA
Dad, my control is fine. It has
been for years-
Trevor raises his hand and cuts her off.
TREVOR
(to the two boys)
Boys! That's enough. You both know
how we settle disputes.
The boys look up at their father, nod, and file out of the
room.
TREVOR
Colby was very upset though.
KAIA
(sighs)
Where is he?
TREVOR
You already know the answer to
that.
KAIA
(nodding)
How long did he last?
In the background, we hear two wolves howling and snarling.
TREVOR
Maybe ten minutes. He didn't do his
breathing or anything. He just kept
asking for you.
(beat)
I don't even think he tried to
fight it.
Kaia turns, looking pretty damn guilty, and slinks off.
TREVOR
Kaia, I know you don't believe in
our customs. You never have. Last
night, your brother cried for you
when he should've been
concentrating on controlling his
change. Next time you want to stay
out with your friends all night,
remember where your priorities
should be.
Kaia still has her back to him, fighting a well of tears
building up in her eyes. She doesn't respond. She just walks
away.
Nick passes her, coming back into the living room. His
clothes are badly tattered and there's blood all over him. He
sits back down and watches his television program.
Trevor returns to his newspaper.
INT. BASEMENT - SINCAID HOME - DAY
The door at the top of the stairs opens, the only light
coming from the adjacent room. Kaia slowly walks down the
stairs.
KAIA
Colby? Are you awake?
ON a large metal cage in the center of the room. A young BOY
sits in the back corner, arms wrapped around his legs and
shivering like he's freezing to death. This is COLBY SINCAID,
seven years old. He looks up at his big sister, tears
flowing.
COLBY
You weren't here. Dad said you
promised you'd be here.
Kaia grabs a nearby blanket and punches a code into the
security lock on the cage. The door unlocks and she steps in,
kneeling down to her brother.
He has scratches all over his face and body. Most of them are
clotted and healing.
KAIA
(wraps the blanket around
him)
Here ya go. It's cold down here.
She strokes his hair and wipes the tears from his cheeks.
KAIA
I'm sorry I missed last night. I
promise I'll be here tonight.
She holds up her pinky finger and he wraps his around it.
KAIA
See, now I can't break the promise.
Colby manages a smile.
INT. BATHROOM - SINCAID HOME - DAY
Colby's in a garden tub enjoying a nice bubble bath. Kaia is
scrubbing his back.
COLBY
I don't want to go through the
trials, Kaia.
KAIA
None of us do. You need to learn to
control it though or Mom and Dad
will never let you out of the
house. Trust me, I speak from
experience.
COLBY
How old were you when you finally
got it right?
KAIA
(thinks)
Eighteen.
COLBY
Eighteen?!? But that's another-
(counts his fingers)
-nine years!
KAIA
Eleven years. I see Mom's been
teaching you Math. Head down.
He leans his head back and she pours shampoo into his hair.
KAIA
(washing his hair)
Boys always get it faster than
girls though. Nick's only nine and
he got it a year ago. I think it's
something with hormones.
COLBY
What are hormones?
KAIA
Well...you know how sometimes Dad
tells you to stay away from all the
girls in the house? Hormones make
us...mean.
COLBY
Oh.
(thinks)
So I don't have hormones?
KAIA
You do. You just don't have to
worry about them until you're a
teenager. Actually you never have
to worry about them. Mom will.
COLBY
She worries about everything.
Kaia smiles. Observant little kid.
KAIA
Seriously Colby, you have to work
hard at it. Don't you want to go to
public school with other little
boys?
Colby nods his head.
COLBY
Dad always gets his division wrong.
He's not a very good teacher.
KAIA
Tell me about it. I never got to go
to public school because I couldn't
pass the trials. Pray you never
have to learn geometry from him.
She pours a pitcher of water into his hair to get the shampoo
out.
COLBY
Do you like college?
KAIA
I like getting out of the house. So
tonight, you and me, we'll do it
together, okay? Even if you don't
get it right away, I'll be here
with you all night.
COLBY
Promise?
KAIA
You got my pinky. That's a binding
contract.
COLBY
What's a contract?
Kaia laughs to herself a bit. Colby looks at her blankly.
INT. LIVING ROOM - SINCAID HOME - DAY
Trevor's still reading his paper. Kaia comes up behind him
and gives him a kiss on the cheek.
KAIA
I gave Colby a bath and he's taking
a nap now. I'm going out to meet
some friends. I'll be back before
moonrise.
She bounces away. Trevor doesn't look up from his paper.
TREVOR
I need you here for dinner tonight,
Kaia. You need to meet someone.
KAIA
Yeah, who?
TREVOR
Your husband.
Kaia double takes at that one. Trevor looks at her and
proudly grins.
TREVOR
I know it's taken longer than
anticipated, but you're a tough
girl to find a match for, honey. I
think I've found the right one
though. You'll love him.
(looks back to his paper)
Six o'clock sharp.
KAIA
(icily)
Yes, sir.
She lingers there for a moment, but he doesn't seem to
notice. Apparently there's some interesting news today.
Eventually she leaves.
INT. MAIN AREA - OCCULT SHOP - DAY
A buzz and a SPARK sends Pike to the ground. He looks up at
the fluorescent light he was working on while sucking on the
finger that just got electrocuted.
Gabriella smirks at him as she reaches for an item on a high
shelf. She immediately winces in pain and clutches her side.
Connor lightly moves her to the side and gets the item for
her.
GABRIELLA
So...can I call an electrician yet?
CONNOR
No.
PIKE
No.
Gabriella scoffs and throws her hands up.
PIKE
(to Connor)
You got any burn spray?
Connor looks to Gabriella for that answer. She nods towards
the back storage room.
CONNOR
(to Pike)
Be right back.
Pike gets back to his feet. Gabriella tosses him a bottle of
water and moves behind the main counter.
GABRIELLA
I know I'm asking a stupid question
here, but why are you two being so
stubborn about calling the pros?
PIKE
Basic man laws.
He counts them off on his fingers.
PIKE
(one)
Never stop and ask for directions.
(two)
Never guess a woman's age or
weight.
(three)
Never call a professional in to fix
something you can do yourself.
Gabriella smiles and shakes her head.
GABRIELLA
Well at this rate, I should get to
the grand reopening right before
I"m ready to retire.
PIKE
Whatever. We get points for effort
right?
(beat)
Hey G, can I get your opinion on
something?
GABRIELLA
Only if you promise not to call me
'G' anymore.
PIKE
Gabriella's too long. Names
shouldn't be more than two
syllables.
GABRIELLA
(counts on her fingers)
O-li-ver.
PIKE
Which is why I go by Pike.
He pulls a small box out of his pocket and opens it to reveal
a large engagement ring. Gabriella is taken aback.
GABRIELLA
(awestruck)
Wow.
(looks at Pike)
How can you afford this?
PIKE
Got a friend who runs another
shelter. She came into a bunch of
money some years back and basically
funded all the renovations on the
building. I had a little left over.
GABRIELLA
I...I didn't know you two were that
serious.
Pike chuckles to himself.
PIKE
I didn't either until a few weeks
ago.
GABRIELLA
This isn't a reaction to the thing
with the kids, is it?
PIKE
No, I bought this before all that.
GABRIELLA
Oh.
(beat)
So, not to discourage you, but you
sure you're ready to take that
step?
PIKE
Yeah. I mean...
(takes a breath and
exhales)
...there was this one night.
We were just laying around watching
a movie and eating popcorn and I
just sorta...looked at it. It
wasn't a special moment or
anything. We were just hanging out.
He shuts the box and sips his water.
PIKE
So I just look at her, right, and
it just hit me. I'm in love.
(beat)
I bought the ring the next day.
Gabriella nods, her mood started to sour.
GABRIELLA
That's...very sweet. It's a very
beautiful ring. Listen, I'm gonna
check on something in the back,
so...
She saunters off. Pike doesn't get the sudden mood swing, but
shrugs his shoulders and takes another sip of his water.
Connor comes out from the back with a small aerosol bottle.
CONNOR
Here ya go.
Pike takes the bottle and slides the box to Connor.
PIKE
(sprays his finger)
Check that out. What do you think?
CONNOR
(looks at the ring)
You need it refitted.
PIKE
You think?
CONNOR
(closes the box)
Yeah, it's too small for me.
They share a smile. Kaia walks into in the shop and beams
when she sees her boyfriend. She walks up to the counter,
noticing the box in Connor's hand.
KAIA
(off box)
What's that?
Connor quickly puts the box in his pocket.
CONNOR
Oh, nothing. Gabriella's birthday
is coming up, so it's a gift for
her.
(changing the subject)
Hey, we should do something for
her. Take her out or something.
KAIA
Yeah, that'd be fine. Let me know
if you need help with anything.
(to Pike)
You got any plans?
He grabs her hips and pulls her in close.
PIKE
You.
She smiles and pushes him off by his chest.
KAIA
Anyway, I think I've put it off
long enough. I want you to come to
dinner and meet my family.
PIKE
About damn time.
She punches him on the arm.
PIKE
Hey, I'm happy. Your old man had to
find out about me sooner or later.
What time?
KAIA
Six.
PIKE
Six? That's only a couple hours
from now.
KAIA
Yeah umm...we eat early a couple
times a month and have this family
night stuff. I don't want you stay
for that, but if you you think
you're ready...
PIKE
Absolutely.
KAIA
Great. I'll call my Mom and tell
her to set an extra plate.
She pulls out her phone and walks away.
Pike holds out his hand and Connor places the box in it.
PIKE
Nice cover up.
CONNOR
Thanks.
PIKE
So...you wanna go to dinner in my
place?
Connor gives him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
