TEASER
FADE IN.
INT. COURT ROOM - DAY
Open on a shot facing the left wall of a packed courtroom.
PULL BACK from the wall to reveal a female PROSECUTOR
holding a notepad. All eyes in the room are on her.
PROSECUTOR
Mrs. Sincaid, how large is your
family?
ON Kaia, hair up in a bun and dressed in a business suit,
looking quite professional.
KAIA
Immediate or extended?
PROSECUTOR
Immediate, please.
Kaia thinks to herself.
KAIA
Including myself? Ten.
The prosecutor's a little thrown by that number.
PROSECUTOR
(blinks)
Ten? That's quite a family.
KAIA
(shrugs; nonchalant)
My parents cranked us out like
rabbits.
Everyone in the room, including the prosecutor, chuckle.
PROSECUTOR
Speaking of which, how do you get
along with your parents?
Kaia visibly stiffens at that question. This doesn't go
unnoticed by the prosecutor, who jots a note on her paper.
KAIA
Well, mom's a bit old fashioned and
we butt heads every now and then.
Different generations and all.
PROSECUTOR
Uh huh. And your father?
KAIA
Dad...
(thinks)
He was more of the same, but uh-
She pauses to swallow a lump in her throat.
KAIA
He died earlier this year.
PROSECUTOR
Oh. I'm sorry for your loss.
She couldn't have any less emotion in that response if she
were dead.
PROSECUTOR
How did he die?
Kaia looks away, doing a remarkable job of burying her guilt.
KAIA
He was killed.
PROSECUTOR
(beat; clears throat)
One final question, Ms. Sincaid.
PUSH IN on Kaia, awaiting the query before a MATCH CUT TO:
INT. IN AND OUT BURGER - LIVING ROOM - DAY
The same shot on a flat screen television mounted
PULL AWAY from the screen as a news reporter narrates over
the footage. There's a 'Prerecorded' stamp in the upper right
corner.
REPORTER
This morning, the jury selection
began process for the Savant murder
trial. Gus Savant has been indicted
on two counts of first degree
murder, that of his wife Sandy and
five year old...
The reporter's voice fades into the background of noisy
customers and employees.
CONNOR and PIKE are seated at a table across the room.
Connor is wolfing down a Double Double animal style (two
mustard grilled beef patties, double cheese, with grilled
onions).
Pike's eyes are glued to the television, mesmerized by the
image of his girl. He has a burger in front of him with only
a few bites taken out of it.
GABRIELLA walks up behind them and sits in the empty seat
next to Connor. She has a large cup with her.
GABRIELLA
Next time, can we pick a place that
serves something other than meat?
CONNOR
(nods at the cup)
What's that you got?
GABRIELLA
Strawberry milkshake.
CONNOR
(smirks)
Well, there ya go.
Gabriella rolls her eyes and takes a sip of her shake. Connor
swallows a huge lump of food and washes it down with his
Coke.
CONNOR
Besides, tell me you don't feel the
irony in this. A burger joint with
two drive through lanes built on
the ashes of the most powerful-
GABRIELLA
(interrupting)
I'd just as soon rather forget
altogether. Only thing I'm feeling
is disgusted that you're eating
flesh on the grounds where over a
hundred people were slaughtered.
Connor, who had his wide open mouth over his burger, freezes.
His eyes roll over to Gabriella, whose expression dares him
to challenge the statement.
He puts the burger down on the tray and scoffs. There's a
beat before he gets up, picking his tray up with him.
CONNOR
(icily)
I hate you.
Gabriella lightly giggles as Connor walks off.
She looks to Pike, who is still staring at the screen.
PIKE
(spaced out)
She looks great on camera, doesn't
she?
Gabriella rolls her eyes again. Men.
KAIA (O.S.)
I look better in person.
Pike turns around to see Kaia standing over him. He grins as
she leans down to give him a kiss.
Gabriella rubs her neck and looks away, the public affection
making her uncomfortable.
KAIA
Sorry I took so long. Traffic was a
bitch. I've only got-
(checks her watch)
-thirty minutes before I have to
get back.
She takes a seat next to Pike and pulls the pick out of her
hair.
Pike moves his head away as she shakes her hair loose and
down.
KAIA
God, I hate wearing this up.
GABRIELLA
Why? I think it looks cute that
way!
KAIA
You think so? It's a such a pain
the ass because it's so curly that
it won't hold unless I straighten
it first and-
Pike shakes his head, already sick of the girly talk. He
looks around the dining area.
PIKE
Okay, where the hell's Connor?
Gabriella searches for Connor too, finding him standing in
front of the aforementioned television, watching the report.
ON Connor's face. His eyes saying he's currently on Jupiter,
possibly even Neptune, not aware of anything around him.
Gabriella and Kaia swap confused looks before Gabriella gets
up and walks over to him.
She grabs his arm and shakes it. He doesn't turn around.
CONNOR
(not all there)
Yeah?
GABRIELLA
You okay? What's up?
CONNOR
I think I saw something. Or didn't
see...
(pauses)
I'll have to wait for a replay of
the footage.
GABRIELLA
Well, I've got this saving on the
DVR at home.
This gets Connor to turn and look at her.
CONNOR
You record the news? Isn't it on
every six hours?
She meekly smiles.
GABRIELLA
I don't like to miss anything. If
you wanna grab something to go, we
can head out.
CONNOR
(sarcastic)
No, I'm not hungry anymore. Can't
imagine why.
(beat)
Though we should wait for...
He looks to Kaia and Pike. Gabriella turns to see them ending
a deep kiss. They pull away and rub noses.
It's sickeningly sweet, enough to make teeth rot.
GABRIELLA
Suddenly, I don't have an appetite
either.
Pike and Kaia go back to kissing, oblivious to everything but
each other.
INT. G&C'S CONDO - LIVING ROOM - DAY
Gabriella and Pike are sitting on the couch. Gabriella has
the remote aimed at the television.
Connor enters from the kitchen and stands behind the couch,
handing Pike a beer over his shoulder.
GABRIELLA
Alright, here's the report. What
are we looking for again?
CONNOR
Stop. You went too far back. Skip
past when they were showing Kaia.
PIKE
(offended)
Hey!
CONNOR
(watching the screen)
Dude, this is important. You can
oogle her later.
Pike still looks hurt for all of a split second before he
shrugs, conceding the point.
Connor points at the screen.
CONNOR
Stop! Right there. Go back about
five seconds.
Gabriella obliges.
CONNOR
Okay, play it from there. Annnndddd
freeze it right there! You see it?
The screen is a still shot of GUS SAVANT, an Italian man in
his mid thirties with curly black hair, walking down the
halls of the court house with his team of attorneys.
Pike catches it immediately, his eyes going wide.
PIKE
(dumbstruck)
Dude.
He looks back over his shoulder to Connor, whose eyes are
glued to the screen.
Gabriella, who still doesn't get it, looks to Pike for an
explanation. All she gets is a blank stare.
GABRIELLA
What?
Now she looks to Connor.
PUSH IN on Connor, slowly cutting her and Pike out of frame.
GABRIELLA
Connor, what is it?
Connor doesn't answer, his eyes not leaving the screen.
In the image, the walls lining the hallway are all mirrors,
reflecting everyone on screen.
Except Gus himself. He doesn't have a reflection!
BLACK OUT.
END OF TEASER
ACT ONE
FADE IN.
EXT. PARK - DAY
Lesi precedes Connor and Gabriella down a bike trail in a
park. Gabriella is holding her pet's leash.
The scene is framed so Lesi's in the foreground with
Gabriella and Connor just barely in focus behind her.
She's shaking her head, apparently still in disbelief.
GABRIELLA
A vampire.
CONNOR
Not really wrapping your head
around it, are you?
GABRIELLA
I'm waiting for someone to jump out
and say it's a practical joke.
CONNOR
If it is, it's not a very good one.
I don't see the humor at all.
GABRIELLA
(mocking voice)
Tee hee.
They stop as Lesi, who seems to be leading her owners around
more so than the other way around, stops to sniff the grass.
Looking for a good place to do her business.
GABRIELLA
God, where to even start? How the
hell did he manage to get married
and have a kid? The kid more than
anything.
CONNOR
(teasing)
Did Mommy and Daddy not have that
special talk with you?
GABRIELLA
Vampires are sterile, Connor. They
can't conceive kids.
Connor stares at her, dumbfounded that she'd make such a
ludicrous statement in his presence. He leans over into her
personal bubble and waves right in her face.
CONNOR
Hi, there. My name's Connor. Maybe
you've heard of my birth parents.
GABRIELLA
You're different though.
Lesi leads them off again.
CONNOR
So I'm told. Over and over again.
GABRIELLA
You know what I mean. Reincarnation
of blah zay blah. This is just a
normal, run of the mill vampire.
CONNOR
What makes you think he's not an
exception as well? Maybe he's
another marionette for the Higher
Powers.
GABRIELLA
(incredulous)
Give me a break, Connor. He's a
vampire, for Christ's sake. What
would they want to do with him?
CONNOR
Again, I present exhibit A, my
father.
GABRIELLA
Worse mass murderer in recorded
history? I rest my case.
Connor opens his mouth to protest, but Gabriella cuts him
off.
GABRIELLA
I know what you meant.
(beat; sighs)
It just doesn't make sense.
CONNOR
Either way, it's gotten my
attention.
GABRIELLA
So we'll look into it.
CONNOR
Thought you were busy working on
the Eye?
GABRIELLA
And ignore one of your hunches?
I've learned to know better by now.
A car passes in front of the frame, blocking everything from
view.
MATCH CUT TO:
EXT. COURT HOUSE - DAY
A similar car driving out of frame, revealing a mob like
media waiting outside the court house.
Behind the pack of rabid reporters is Pike, leaning on his
bike, arms crossed and waiting.
Kaia walks up to him from the side and startles him.
KAIA
Hey, babe.
Pike looks at her, confused. He points to the front entrance
of the court house.
KAIA
They snuck us all out a different
way to avoid the hounds. We're
under non disclosures with strict
orders on avoiding the press until
it's over.
PIKE
We? You mean-
Kaia nods.
KAIA
I got picked. How, I don't know,
but whatever. They're not messing
around though. We already being
sequestered in a hotel and the
trial hasn't even started yet.
Pike gets on the bike. Kaia climbs on behind him.
PIKE
Are you serious?
KAIA
Yeah, I have to go home and pack.
We have to check in at the hotel by
seven.
Pike hands Kaia her helmet and flips his helmet right side up
to put it on.
PIKE
Lockdown so soon?
He slides on the helmet and starts the bike. Kaia wraps her
arms around his waist and gives a light squeeze.
KAIA
Yeah, but I've got a few hours.
Time for a conjugal visit before
you drop me at home.
She puts her helmet on. Pike looks over his shoulder at her.
His face isn't visible, but it's a safe bet he's probably
smiling.
He pulls off into traffic.
INT. G&C'S CONDO - LIVING ROOM - DAY
Gabriella's propped up on the couch, staring at the monitor
of her laptop resting on her legs.
Lesi, soaking wet and looking like a mop, runs into the room
and shakes, splashing water all over Gabriella.
GABRIELLA
Ugh, Lesi!
Connor runs out into the room next. He's also soaked with
soap suds all over him. He's also wearing a huge pair of
latex gloves.
Gabriella gives him a wry look, raised eyebrow and all.
CONNOR
She's...squirmy.
(changes subject)
Pike get you the phone records?
GABRIELLA
He said he should have them in a
couple of hours. His cop friend's
eating dinner right now.
Lesi shakes herself again. Gabriella tries to cover up with
her arms.
GABRIELLA
Lesi, cage!
Lesi bounds off, leaving wet paw prints on the floor.
Connor pulls the gloves off and leans over the couch, just
above Gabriella.
CONNOR
Find anything interesting?
Gabriella takes a whiff of the air and scoffs at Connor.
GABRIELLA
Eww, back up a bit. You smell like
wet fur.
Connor sheepishly backs away and takes a seat in the
recliner.
Gabriella eyes almost burn a hole through him.
GABRIELLA
(through gritted teeth)
Kindly get your soggy, rank ass off
the leather, thanks.
Connor groans and stalks off to his room.
CONNOR
Fine, I'll change.
He's out of sight when he continues.
CONNOR (O.S.)
And you didn't answer my question.
GABRIELLA
(sighs)
Not much. It's all the same stuff
over and over again. Like he's been
human his whole life. Even the
murders don't fit a vampire's M.O.
CONNOR (O.S.)
What do you mean?
GABRIELLA
Savant's wife and kid weren't just
drained. They were butchered. Limbs
cut up, faces mutilated.
CONNOR (O.S.)
Yeah...
He comes back out in fresh clothes and stands over the couch.
CONNOR
'Cause there aren't any vamps out
there that kill just for the fun of
it.
Gabriella moves her legs to make space for him. He sits down
and she puts her legs on his lap.
GABRIELLA
(shakes her head)
The more I read about this case,
the more confusing it gets.
CONNOR
How so?
Gabriella clicks a few times.
GABRIELLA
Like here.
She turns the laptop around to face him.
GABRIELLA
Take a look at this.
PULL AWAY as Connor starts to read whatever's on the screen.
INT. SINCAID HOME - KAIA'S BEDROOM - DAY
Kaia drops two folded shirts into a suitcase.
She shuts it, having trouble doing so on account of her bed
bouncing from COLBY SINCAID jumping up and down on it.
COLBY
(between breaths and
jumps)
How long ya gonna be gone?
KAIA
(shakes her head)
I don't know, honey.
COLBY
When will you be back?
Kaia can't help but smile at the redundant question.
KAIA
You just asked me that.
COLBY
No, I didn't. I asked how long you
were gonna be gone.
Kaia grabs her baby brother to stop him from jumping.
KAIA
Soon. That's all I can say. Now
give me a kiss.
Colby shyly withdraws into himself, not wanting to.
KAIA
Fine then. Suit yourself.
She pulls back, but Colby jumps forward and gives her a light
kiss on the lips. They hug, during which Kaia lifts him off
the bed and lowers him to the ground.
KAIA
Promise you'll be good?
Colby holds up his pinky. Kaia interlaces her with his.
Holding the pinky swear, she leads him out of the room.
INT. SINCAID HOME - LIVING ROOM - NEXT
CLAIRE SINCAID sits in an easy chair, working on a sudoku
book.
Behind her in the next room, Kaia bounds down the stairs,
carrying her luggage.
KAIA
Oli should be here any minute.
Claire sets her book down and sighs.
CLAIRE
Are you sure you can't get out of
this?
KAIA
(exasperated)
Not without jail time, mother. For
the umpteenth time.
CLAIRE
I'm just concerned. You've been
ignoring your Alpha duties since
you became-
Kaia stomps into the room now, fed up with this line of
conversation already.
KAIA
Because my duties are stupid.
She's standing at the chair now. Her mother looks up to her.
KAIA
I've got better things to do with
my time than match make for my
sisters and sit around a board room
with a bunch of perverted old men
trying to look down my shirt.
CLAIRE
(ignoring her)
Try as you might, you're in a
position to lead this clan, young
lady. The first woman ever. There's
a lot of expectations on you.
KAIA
From who? Not the Elders. They're
waiting for someone to kill me so
they can get a guy back in the
role.
CLAIRE
Well, from me for starters.
KAIA
(incredulous)
Whatever.
A HORN beeps from outside.
KAIA
That's Oli. I gotta go.
She leans down and they simultaneously kiss each other's
cheeks.
CLAIRE
You're also going to miss an
important meeting of the Elders.
KAIA
(leaving the room)
It's cancelled.
CLAIRE
You cancelled it?
KAIA (O.S.)
I'm not the only one that's not
going to be there. See you soon.
The front door shuts and Claire goes back to her book.
EXT. SINCAID HOME - NEXT
Pike is leaning against Gabriella's car, waiting on Kaia.
The sun is setting behind the house.
As Kaia approaches, she looks confused at the ride, actually
pointing at it with a puzzled look.
PIKE
What?
(off suitcase)
You planned on carrying that on my
bike?
KAIA
No, I planned on you carrying it.
How'd you talk Gabs out of her car?
PIKE
You kidding me? She's been offering
to bear my children if I let her
borrow the bike. I thought this was
a more even exchange.
He takes the suitcase from her and opens the passenger door
for her. Ever the gentleman.
After shutting the door behind her, he opens the rear door
and tosses the suitcase into the seat.
FLASH CUT TO:
INT. CALL CENTER - DAY
Gabriella and Connor weave through a maze of cubicles, both
carrying motorcycle helmets. Gabriella's leading the way.
CONNOR
Was the wheelie really necessary?
GABRIELLA
(grinning)
Absolutely.
CONNOR
And the race with the Vette?
GABRIELLA
He challenged me.
(looking around)
Here we are.
She turns into one cubicle.
ARC around to the back of a large plush executive style
chair. It spins around to reveal a gorgeous African American
woman wearing a headset.
GABRIELLA
(waves)
Hey!
(points to Connor)
This is-
Connor sidesteps around her, putting on his best charming
look and gently taking the girl's hand in his own.
CONNOR
I'm Connor. And you are...?
The girl pulls her hand away.
GIRL
Married to a wonderful Anagogic
demon, thanks.
(smirks)
You can call me Aggie for short.
Connor slouches, feeling the sting of instant rejection.
Aggie turns to Gabriella and smiles.
AGGIE
Gabriella Heron, it's been too
long.
You don't call, text, communicate
through the astral plane. Nothing.
GABRIELLA
I know, Aggie.
Aggie stands and the two women hug.
AGGIE
How have you been?
(nods to Connor)
I see you've been womb raiding.
CONNOR
Hey!
GABRIELLA
He's just a friend.
AGGIE
Right, right. Well, cutting to the
chase because I have a living to
make, what's up?
GABRIELLA
Gus Savant.
AGGIE
The vampire?
CONNOR
(blinks)
How'd you know?
GABRIELLA
She's a psychic, Connor. Probably
felt his aura and picked up on the
demonic presence.
AGGIE
That and, well, he told me about
the tenth time he called in.
A beat.
GABRIELLA
Oh.
Aggie sits back down in her chair. Gabriella sits down in a
chair opposite her and Connor leans on the cubicle wall.
AGGIE
What do you want to know about him?
CONNOR
Anything you can tell us.
AGGIE
Why the interest?
CONNOR
A hunch.
AGGIE
Fair enough.
(sighs)
Well, for starters, I don't think
he did it. Just from talking to him
everyday, the guy's aura just
screams guilty.
GABRIELLA
Everyday?
AGGIE
Just about. He'd call asking for
advice about the most mundane
things. Especially after he came
out to his wife.
(beat)
I'm not complaining. He single
handedly paid my rent for months.
CONNOR
What do you mean came out?
Aggie picks up a file and starts to work on her nails.
AGGIE
He told her he was a vampire before
they get hitched. Called me twice a
day the week before he did it. God,
he was so nervous.
CONNOR
And she was okay with this?
AGGIE
Still walked down the aisle, didn't
she? Gus is a total sweetheart. He
wouldn't hurt a fly. His soul made
his aura so heavy that-
Gabriella and Connor look at one another in total shock.
Connor holds out his hand to interrupt.
GABRIELLA
Whoa, back up. His what?
AGGIE
(nonchalant)
His soul.
Her eyes go back and forth between the two, taking in their
reactions.
GABRIELLA
But that's...
(beat)
Aggie, are you sure?
AGGIE
Positive. It took me awhile to work
out what that vibe I kept getting
from his aura was, but yeah. Gus
has a soul.
Connor and Gabriella share another look, both not wanting to
believe it.
BLACK OUT.
